Kakishibu, made from unripe persimmons that are pressed and fermented, contains tannins that offer waterproofing and preservative qualities to fibers and wood. Recent studies have even reported antiviral effects, with kakishibu components helping to inactivate the novel coronavirus. The “kakishibu dyeing” process involves soaking pure white bags in kakishibu liquid and then drying them in the sun repeatedly to create a deep, unique color. This traditional method also gives the fabric a stiffness and durability. “Kure-zome” is a technique where fabric dyed with kakishibu is further treated with iron-rich water to turn it black. This method was used historically to reduce color fading and enhance fabric strength before industrial products were available. Kakishibu dyeing, which originates from nature and returns to it, represents a new form of sustainable practice suited to modern needs. This series celebrates the value of ancient techniques while discovering new relevance.
